Common Name: “Peak”

Buoyancy control dictates if you’re a good diver. Having the most logged dives, or the most expensive computer, or the fanciest dry suit doesn't mean anything. The good diver is the one that has mastered absolute control of their buoyancy. Period.

By the completion of your Open Water training, you’ve learned a lot of theory and demonstrated mastery of all the basic scuba skills, but now the time has come to focus entirely, and specifically, on the quality of your diving. Every diver carries with them two Buoyancy Control Devices: the BCD strapped to their back and their lungs. This class will teach you how to use that second BCD to achieve pinpoint positioning in the water. You will focus on hovering skills, trimming your gear for greatest streamlining, and then using your lungs and body positioning to achieve depth changes by using the kelp forest as an obstacle course. Additionally, we’ll teach you new fin kicking styles to allow you to cruise over the sand, reef and rock without disturbing the wild life, bottom or ruining the viz!

This class has the highest impact on the quality of your diving, focuses on the most challenging dive skill to master and certainly one of the most fun classes to teach! It’s also an absolute prerequisite for several other specialties such as Underwater Photography and Wreck Diving.

The Peak class is also offered in a package with the Enriched Air Nitrox class, as part of our Open Water Upgrade.

What is this “Open Water Upgrade” you keep mentioning?

People aren’t born hitting home runs and we’re not born hovering motionless inches above reefs 60 feet underwater for an hour (with the possible exception of Jacques Cousteau). We feel it is important that we not just certify safe divers, but we want to work hard to make sure that you are a GOOD diver too, and the way that happens is through practice, practice, practice.

A good diver is known not by how many dives they have, or the cost and shininess of their equipment. A good diver is known by the quality of their buoyancy control. To help really get you up to speed fast in your new sport, we offer a combined package of the Peak Performance Buoyancy class and the single most popular continuing education class, Enriched Air Nitrox to our Open Water students for an additional $299. These two classes together, focus entirely on the quality of your diving, and extending your time under water. The best part is that we can structure your training so that you can accomplish all of it, Open Water, Peak and Nitrox, right in the two weekend time schedule of your Open Water class with only a minimal amount of extra work! If you upgrade your open water class with Peak and Nitrox, you won’t incur any extra travel or equipment rental costs that you would if you took those classes later, and if you choose to use Nitrox that weekend, we can arrange to have Nitrox tanks ready for you at a small cost.

Your Open Water Upgrade can be added to your shopping cart at the time of purchase!
